The Daily Mist is a plain-English guide to being ready for everyday emergencies in the UK — power cuts, storms, flooding, water outages and other disruptions that can leave a household on its own for a few days.
In October 2026 the UK government’s “Be Ready” campaign asked every household to be able to manage for at least three days. Most of us aren’t there yet, and much of what’s online is either alarmist or trying to sell expensive kit. We want to do the opposite: calm, practical advice, budget-friendly options, and honest reviews of the gear that’s actually worth having.
What you’ll find here
- Step-by-step emergency kit checklists
- How much food and water to store, and how to rotate it
- Torches, radios, power banks and power-cut planning
- Honest gear reviews and buying guides
We always point to official guidance (GOV.UK, the Met Office, your local council and the British Red Cross) for anything safety-critical. If you’re in immediate danger, call 999.
